FAQ

How big a speaker for a 12m² room?

A 4–5 inch bookshelf or a quality compact powered pair is plenty, the KEF LSX II fills that space without pressurising it. Bigger woofers just excite room modes you'll then fight.

Do I need a subwoofer?

Not in a small room with the picks above, all reach low enough for music at a desk. Add a sub only for movies, and only after placing the mains properly.

Powered or passive for a desk?

Powered: one box, one cable, done, KEF, JBL and Edifier win on simplicity. Passive (ELAC, Wharfedale, Q Acoustics) wins on upgrade path, but needs an amp and more desk space.

Where do I put speakers near a wall?

Rear-ported boxes need 20–30 cm of air; front-ported and sealed designs (much of this list) are far more forgiving. Toe in slightly, tweeter near ear height, and keep them off the same surface as your turntable.

Can these work as TV speakers?

The ones with HDMI ARC or optical (KEF LSX II), absolutely, and they'll embarrass any soundbar near the price for music. Pure-analogue boxes need a TV with analogue out or a small DAC in between.
