Beginners need quiet, simple gain and enough power for the headphones they actually own. We weighted noise floor, gain steps and everyday use over esoteric specs.

If your headphones are quiet, harsh, or hissy straight from a laptop or phone dongle, yes. If they already get loud and clean, an amp buys you almost nothing; upgrade the headphones first.
What counts as hard to drive?
High impedance (250–600 ohm Beyers/Sennheisers) or low sensitivity planars. Most IEMs and mainstream headphones need milliwatts, not watts, a $49 dongle like the KA1 is already enough.
Dongle or desktop?
Dongle if you listen at a laptop or phone and own IEMs or easy headphones. Desktop the moment you own 250+ ohm headphones, want a volume knob, or hate dongle battery drain.
Will an amp fix bad headphones?
No. Amps reveal what's there; they don't add detail, bass, or soundstage that the drivers can't produce. Budget goes to headphones first, source second.
What cables and settings do I need?
USB from computer to DAC, headphones into the amp, low gain to start. Set system volume to max and control level on the amp, that keeps the noise floor lowest.
